What North Austin Needs that South Austin Has…

Apr. 27. 2010

The other day I had the pleasure of having a few hours to kill on Saturday. And a beautiful sunny, yet not overbearingly hot it was.

South Austin is known for it’s funk, originality and delicious hole in the walls. Several trailers reside here, with hopefully a few more business plans in the works. I know I would like to see a bigger variety than the local hot spot, Torchy’s tacos. The Austinite trailer with original logo does very well here, as well as their in store spot just up the stree on S. 1st past Oltorf. You can also find Holy Cacao and a hot dog place called Man Bites Dog-both tasty and original.

The Odd Duck Farm to Market used to be in this spot off S. 1st but has now moved to a little spot across from the Alamo Drafthouse off S. Lamar. The trailers off S. Lamar also have a FANTASTIC donut place that you must try-even if you are dieting or trying to eat healthy-just one for a splurge! Specialty donuts with names like ODB (donut holes with icing rolled in coconut shavings) and Blue Balls (blue icing and blue raspberry filling) and I could be wrong on this, but if memory serves correctly there is one called the Flying Pig (something about a donut sandwiched in bacon with maple syrup topping-OMG).

Now, not that the chef that opened The Odd Duck farm to market trailer wants to be know for this, but creating tastiness must run in the family, because he is the son of Z Tejas’ former executive Chef, Jack Allen, who now has his own original and delicious restaurant at “the Y” in Oak Hill, self entitled: Jack Allen’s Kitchen (www.jackallenskitchen.com), doing quite well, serving great locally produced and grown food on an awesome patio with reasonable prices and brunch on the weekends-what more could an Austin restaurant ask for?

Anyway, we are finding South Austin trailer park eatery’s in high demand, but sadly you can only find them in SOUTH AUSTIN. Someone please open up something tasty on Burnet Road! Yes, there is the chicken and waffles trailer, and Hat Creek Burgers new store, which originally started in a trailer off S. Congress (yet another S. Austin trailer spot where you can find Hey Cupcake!, Hudson’s on the Bend version of food in a cone and more tacos). Can we please Keep All of Austin Weird and not just the South of the river? South Dallas (aka suburbia and North Austin) needs some love and flare too. There has to be some great spots to put an airstream trailer serving deliciousness.

I guess that is Austin for you, different strokes for different folks, in all different areas.

In conclusion, I would like to add, if you have a sweet tooth like me, but you don’t want to over do it you must try Holy Cacoa in the S. 1st Trailer Park Eatery. They have these little bite size cake bites that look like lollipops that are, “cake balls” yes, that is what they are called and they have red velvet, carrot cake, chocolate of course and my personal fav-chocolate and peanut butter. One little bite hits the spot.

Give it a try. And give those cheap eats in Austin a try. I heard the per person average on a National basis is actually the cheapest in Austin, maybe because of all the trailers and hole in the walls restaurants.
