Moving

Jun. 09. 2010

My Dad always told me growing up there were two things he hated more than anything in life: Moving and Painting. After my past move last week, I now realize why.

Moving when I was in college wasn’t so bad, but maybe because I didn’t have a whole lot of (heavy or important) furniture. Plus I always had my dad and friends to help me move. Well, now that I am a little older and this past weekend I moved to a place that is a town home style whopping three stories with narrow staircases and sharp turns I now see that paying for movers is a much better investment. It took over a whopping week to get us fully moved-maybe do to a lack of packing and planning, but moving a couch is nothing compared to moving dresser drawers!

Anyway, here are my moving tips, that I wished I would have followed.

Have a garage sale, or sell items on Craig’s List, e-Bay etc. Ask yourself-have I used this in over a year?

Secondly gather boxes (check dept. stores, Best Buys, Hobby Lobby, and the back of shopping centers, most boxes aren’t in dumpsters, but broken down)

Also make sure you have a permanent marker and packing tape.

Start packing things on the wall, like decor-items you don’t necessarily use, older clothes you won’t be wearing that week, books etc.

If your move is going to be in more than a few days: Pack all but main kitchen items, a few clothes you need and bedding/bathroom for the next few days.

If your move is going to happen all in one day: Have every item but the few clothes and bathroom, kitchen items you will need. Load them separately in the truck, and label them so they are one of the easiest things to find and unpack-since they will be the most needed.

Next-make sure movers do all the wrapping of furniture and moving for you. It will save you a lot of time, soreness and fights with your fellow moving partner.

Good luck!
